Profesional studies - week three

Professional studies

Week three lesson:

In this lesson we watched a documentary that is on www.4od.com..(http://www.channel4.com/programmes/faking-it/4od#2922644). This documentary is about a man called David Keith swaps his job as a radiographer for a job in the industry of fashion photography and at the end of this he would enter a competition and he ends up winning despite only being trained for a matter of week and previously having no actual knowledge or experience in photography.

This was such an interesting this to watch it gave you a little bit of in sight to how how the fashion industry works and how a photographer would work in that field.

Professional studies - week two

Professional studies

Week two lesson:

Introduction to time management
http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2012/may/04/time-management-tips-busy-people
During week two we looked at time management and how we could effectively manage time between going to uni, completing coursework and any children or part time jobs we may have. We also got shown a document that had PDP (personal development planning) infomation on it. Below i have included what the text read:

PDP (Personal Development Planning)

Information sheet

Personal Development Planning (PDP) is a process that will give you the opportunity to plan and reflect on your learning and development throughout your programme in preparation for future professional practice.
This list below is to be a guide as to how to approach your PDP.

PDP documents:
  • Curriculum vitae (CVs)
  • Skills audits and goal-setting checklist
  • Evidence of planning
  • Your written self-evaluations produced during modules and assignments.
  • Copies of your summative assessment feedback sheets
  • Personal statements ( e.g. cover letter for future opportunities)
  • Application forms and letters (for jobs, further study etc.)
  • Work experience reports and feedback from employers
  • Certificates, testimonials and references
  • Career research and professional contacts
  • Applications for sponsorships
  • Evidence of professional practice including freelance work, commissions, exhibitions, etc.
  • Publicity, press cuttings and promotional material

You will be encouraged to keep a section of PDP evidence in your Professional Studies files at each Level of your programme, which will include the above elements, some of which will be summatively assessed within your modules:

PDP will benefit you by:
·       Providing a clear overview of your studies
·       Helping you to reflect critically on your progress and performance
·       Enabling you to become more independent
·       Encouraging you to take an active role in your learning and career development
·       Providing you with opportunities for self-reflection, forward planning
·       Enhancing your opportunities for learning and development

Enable you to:
  • Become more effective, confident and independent learner
  • Plan and manage your learning more effectively
  • See changes in yourself as a result of monitoring your own development
  • Identify your personal goals and how you can achieve them
  • Benefit from feedback and make changes within your own practice
  • Develop a resource of knowledge and information that will help you prepare you for job applications, interviews, and future employment or further study

 Time management exercise:

During class we were given a sheet that asked us to write down on bullet points what we spend our time doing outside of uni like a job, family time, friend time, TV, computer etc. Following this there was a pie chart below and we were asked to convert the things we do outside of uni to the pie chart.
This gave us a better understanding on where our time actually goes thus making us more aware of our time management.

Plagorism

We also learnt about plagiarism and how it is illegal and can ruin your career. One copied idea can be devastating to your career. But plagorism in the art industry is very taboo because every piece or artwork, photography etc you create is inspired by someone else, the definitive thing is whether or not you took an idea and made it your own or you copied another person's idea exactly or almost exactly.

Professional studies - week one

Professional studies

Week one lesson:

SWOT analysis..

Situation (what was the learning task that you undertook?):

Strengths: What would you say were your key strengths?

What skills do I have?
What qualifications have I got?
What specialist knowledge do I have?

Weaknesses: What areas could you develop?

Are there important gaps in my qualification, experience or knowledge?
Are there skills I can improve upon?

Opportunities: What opportunities are there to develop these skills?

Are there opportunities to help me to develop?
Can I gain work experience?
What other opportunities exist?

Threats: Is there anything that can get in the way?

What is holding me back from achieving my goals?

This is what we were shown in week one of professional studies. We also got our assignment brief.
